  • Theodore Roosevelt (1858 – 1919) was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909.

A book by President Roosevelt needs no recommendation from our pen. Every one who has read "The Strenuous Life" will eagerly turn to anything that comes from the same pen. Whatever Mr. Roosevelt does he does with all his might; therefore, we find him chasing the wolf, the bear, the cougar, or the bobcat with untiring zeal.

"Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter,” by Theodore Roosevelt, is one of the very few instances of a book written by a President of the United States and published during his term in office. Mr. Roosevelt‘s literary method in treating of outdoor subjects is well known.

We all know the President of the United States as a many-sided man, admirable on all his sides; we all know him as the mighty hunter whose hardihood and prowess in the wilderness explain to soirte extent the statesman and ruler. But in this most delightful volume he reveals himself to us so thoroughly that it has an interest not only for the sportsman, but for the general reader, far above the interest naturally attached to a volume of sporting reminiscences by an American President.

Wide knowledge, intense, almost boyish, enthusiasm, modesty, and admiration for the companions of his hunting trips—all these we expect to find. But here real wit of thought and phrase is the handmaid of shrewdness and experience, while a genuine "literary touch" makes reading easy as well as profitable. Mr. Roosevelt's criticism is trenchant, his exposition is lucid; in fine, he writes well, and of course he has a vastly interesting story to tell. . . . More than a passing mention is due to the photographs which are quite excellent, from those which show us the bobcat "treed" in a pine, and looking for all the world like a very handsome, very angry, and rather pathetic Persian cat, to those which illustrate the amazing domesticity of the once fierce grizzlies in Yellowstone Park. It is a volume full of enjoyment in every way.

On the whole this is a hearty, healthy, inspiring book, which does much to explain the breezy personality of one of the most prominent rulers of our time, and it is written with a frank simplicity, for which, from less favored heads of states, we should only look in vain. There is a dash of dry humor here and there, but never a sign of effeminate pathos; and throughout there is the love of nature and of life which is only found in clean men who are both strong and honest. He is a man with good red blood in his veins, truth and courage in his heart, and rare good sense in his head. He eats well, sleeps well, works well, and enjoys the thrill and throb of a healthy life like a boy of twenty.

President Roosevelt, the head of a democratic nation, is a democratic sportsman. He is not driven to the scene of battle in a motor, he does not expect a man to load his gun, he does not sit down to an elaborate lunch with ladies, and in short, he is not a featherbed sportsman.

  • Bullying is a serious problem for people with Asperger Syndrome (AS), both at school and in the workplace, and displaying 'different' behavior, such as not understanding social rules or hand-flapping, exacerbates the risk of being victimized.

Writing in an accessible, informal style, the author describes the bullying behavior he and other individuals have experienced, and the effect this has had on their lives. He outlines the reasons for bullying behavior and the danger of persistent recurrence if it remains unchecked, as well as the critical importance of 'involving the bystander'. Nick Dubin goes on to provide a range of effective strategies to address bullies and bullying that can be applied by parents, professionals, schools, and individuals being bullied. He stresses the importance of peer intervention, empathetic teachers, and verbal self-defense, and shows how lack of support, condemning of 'tale telling,' or even blaming the victim reinforces bullying.

This book offers individuals with AS who are being bullied the opportunity to see that they are not alone, and it is an invaluable source of advice for parents, teachers, professionals and personnel managers.

  • The Bremer Detail Protecting the Most Threatened Man in the World eBook John M Del Vecchio Frank Gallagher Online lesen VJI

  • Affirmative action remains a hotly contested issue on our political landscape, yet the institutionalized systems of privilege which uphold the status quo remain unchallenged. Many Americans who advocate a merit-based, race-free worldview do not acknowledge the systems of privilege which benefit them. For example, many Americans rely on a social and sometimes even financial inheritance from previous generations. This inheritance, unlikely to be forthcoming if one's ancestors were slaves, privileges whiteness, maleness, and heterosexuality.

In this important volume, scholars positioned differently with respect to white privilege examine how privilege of all forms manifests itself and how we can, and must, be aware of invisible privilege in our daily lives. Individual chapters focus on language, the workplace, the implications of comparing racism and sexism, race-based housing privilege, the dream of diversity and the cycle of exclusion, the rule of law and invisible systems of privilege, and the power of law to transform society.
